The scene at the head of this page is an old paling fence across a salt lake near Marion Bay at the bottom of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. It is a reminder that even though humans may think their endeavours are important and permanent, nature and time have a habit of disposing of them with scant regard. This photograph was taken about fifteen years ago; today there is little of the fence remaining. Marion Bay is a place where I have done much of my writing. Adjacent to the stunning Innes National Park, its beautiful, sunny, sandy and deserted beaches have been, and continue to be, a source of joy.
